A room that photographs well and a room that lives well are not always the same room. The difference is usually storage, circulation and light — the three things that are hardest to retrofit and easiest to plan for.
We start every interior with a furniture layout, not a finish board. If the sofa, the table and the walkway between them do not fit comfortably on paper, no amount of paint will fix it on site.
Decide what each room is for
Most awkward interiors are rooms asked to do three jobs at once. Naming the primary use, then designing for it, nearly always produces a space that feels bigger than its square footage.
